Paddy’s Whiskers played a wedding ceilidh at Bickley Mill, a beautiful venue in the countryside outside Newton Abbot last Saturday – to celebrate the marriage of Rebecca and Matt.
We arrived a bit early so we could get all the PA gear into the venue before guests arrived. Once we’d set up and sound checked (which takes us an hour or so) – we got to enjoy food from the lovely barbecue – sitting outside on an unseasonably warm October evening.
At 8pm, Matt and Rebecca cut their wedding cake….then we went straight into their first dance (This Year’s Love – by David Gray), which they’d chosen before hand so we could play it through the Whiskers sound system. Beautiful. Here’s a picture:

And then we kicked off the barn dance….with Paddy’s Whiskers’ unique ceilidh dance (invented by our caller Gil Jefferies)…where the guests all take the floor, and during the dance, make an arch for the bride and groom to dance under. Lovely.
We had a packed dance floor all night – what a brilliant crowd – so up for it. A great party.
The ceilidh ran until 11pm and then for the last hour, Andrew from the Whiskers DJ’d for a disco playing tracks chosen before hand by the bride and groom.
A ceilidh or barn dance makes brilliant wedding party entertainment. Paddy’s Whiskers provide a unique blend of music and energy – banjos, bagpipes, mandolin, harmonica, fiddle – and our music, although traditional, is played with in an upbeat contemporary style that appeals to all the generations, from the oldsters who remember “country dancing” at school, to the hipsters into Mumford and Sons and Ray De La Montagne. WE bring great lighting (look at the pictures!) and a high quality PA system to make sure the sound is excellent.
